Winter
To avoid and treat hypothermia and frostbite, the first step is to get out of the cold! Avoid prolonged exposure to below normal temperatures and only enter extreme cold for short periods of time in heavy, insulated clothing. Call 911 if you detect symptoms of hypothermia or frostbite.
Prepare for winter storms ahead of time. Keep batteries for flashlights and radios. Stay stocked on food and groceries throughout the winter, so when a storm is forecast you don’t have to go to the store in bad weather and heavy traffic.
Keep your car’s fuel tank full during cold weather, to prevent the fuel line from freezing.
Move animals to sheltered areas or inside the house.
When driving in icy weather, decrease your speed and increase the distance between your car and the one ahead of you. Also, remember, to turn on your lights, brake gently, use low gears, keep your windshield clean, and stay alert!
