Crash Reconstructionists
Each year, members of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office respond to nearly 2,000 motor vehicle crashes across the county. These incidents range from minor fender benders to collisions involving serious injuries or fatalities.
Skilled and Trained Investigators
All Deputy Sheriffs receive traffic crash investigation training through the West Virginia State Police Academy, ensuring they’re equipped to handle routine crash scenes.
However, some deputies go beyond the basics by completing advanced training to become part of our Crash Reconstruction Team.
Advanced Crash Analysis
Crash Reconstructionists undergo extensive, specialized training that spans several weeks. They learn how to:
-
Analyze complex crash scenes
-
Use high-tech tools and equipment
-
Reconstruct the sequence of events leading to a collision
-
Identify contributing factors, including potential criminal behavior
This expertise allows them to determine how and why a crash happened with a high degree of accuracy.
Specialized Expertise
Some members of the team pursue additional certifications, allowing them to specialize in crashes involving pedestrians or commercial vehicles. Their knowledge is critical in cases where lives are lost or serious legal consequences may follow.
Through their detailed work, the Crash Reconstruction Team plays a vital role in uncovering the truth behind vehicle accidents and supporting justice for victims and their families.
