Judicial Security
The Kanawha County Judicial Annex at 111 Court Street (bound by Court, Virginia, Goshorn, and Quarrier Streets), Charleston, West Virginia was built in 1983. It houses Kanawha County Circuit, Magistrate, Juvenile, and Family Courts, the courts’ clerks, and offices for Mental Hygiene workers and others. There are seven full-time Circuit Judges, each with an assigned bailiff, five Family Court Judges, and ten full-time Magistrates in Kanawha County.
In 2011, the Circuit Courts handled 10,352 civil suits and 1,897 criminal cases, and the Magistrates adjudicated 12,195 misdemeanor cases. In 2012, 324,399 people passed through security screening procedures to access the building. Each business day approximately 1,300 people entering the doors of the building.
The Deputy Sheriffs and civilian security staff members assigned to the building and its judges maintain secure access points and keep the peace inside. The bailiffs must coordinate with the Regional Jail Authority for transport of prisoners to court appearances, and be present during all hearings and proceedings.
A parking garage is attached to the building and is accessible by Goshorn Street. Public parking is available on the second story level, just after passing through the entry booth.
