School Resource Officer

Some of the most impactful members of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office serve not just in our communities—but in our schools.

Our School Resource Officers (SROs) are assigned to Kanawha County middle and high schools, where they go far beyond traditional law enforcement duties. These deputies act as mentors, role models, and trusted resources for students, staff, and families alike.

Building Trust, Preventing Crime

While all SROs are highly trained to respond to potential threats or acts of violence, their everyday role is focused on prevention, connection, and support. They:

• Build meaningful relationships with students

• Deter delinquent behaviors such as underage drinking, tobacco/vape use, and drug abuse

• Serve as liaisons between the school and law enforcement

• Offer guidance and mentorship to students

• Help promote a safe, respectful school environment

A Presence Beyond the Classroom

School Resource Officers are an integral part of the school community. They maintain offices within school buildings and are frequently seen at extracurricular events, including:

• Sports games

• School dances

• Concerts and performances

• Community programs

Their consistent presence fosters positive relationships with students and staff, and provides peace of mind to parents concerned about the safety of their children in today’s world.
